White House: Deported Migrants, Primarily Asian and Latino, to Spend Two Weeks in Djibouti

A flight carrying eight migrants, originally departing from Texas and reportedly en route to South Sudan, will now be held in Djibouti for two weeks due to a court order. White House spokesperson Karoline Leavitt criticized U.S. District Court Judge Brian Murphy in Massachusetts for the decision, made after a hearing concerning the deportation of migrants from various countries including Myanmar, Laos, and Cuba. The judge stated that the Trump administration had violated a prior injunction, which prevents sending individuals to third countries without proper notification or an opportunity to express fears of torture or persecution.

Judge Murphy mandated that the migrants be provided with legal counsel and a minimum of 15 days to contest their deportation if the government pursues sending them to a third country. In response, Leavitt described Murphy’s order as an attempt to “bring these monsters back to our country,” expressing concerns over U.S. diplomatic relations and the safety of federal officials overseeing the migrants. She labeled the individuals as “illegal murderers, criminals, and rapists,” calling the judge’s decision a “massive judicial overreach” and asserting that he was infringing on U.S. foreign policy and national security.

Murphy provided details from a sealed proceeding, explaining that the migrants were informed of their deportation plans late on Monday, just before their scheduled departure the following morning, leaving them without adequate time to seek legal counsel or consult with family. He concluded that the actions of the Department of Homeland Security were a violation of the court’s order.
