Opened in August 2023, Covenant Academy is a K–6 public charter school with aspirations to expand to K–12. In its inaugural year, Covenant earned an impressive B grade from the state—the highest for any public charter school in Alabama. This accomplishment showcases the potential that high-quality education can unlock, particularly for students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds. Notably, 93% of Covenant’s students come from Title 1 households, qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch.
Despite the challenges of operating with fewer resources compared to traditional public schools, Covenant’s focus on supportive environments has allowed students to thrive. The school fosters a strong connection with families, enhancing engagement in their children’s education. However, the lack of local funding poses a significant challenge for charter schools, pushing leaders like July to secure grants and collaborate with community partners to bridge the funding gap.
