LSU secured an overtime win against Ole Miss in a thrilling game at Tiger Stadium this past Saturday, thanks to a touchdown throw by Garrett Nussmeier. However, the celebrations were cut short when fans rushed the field, resulting in a $250,000 fine for LSU from the SEC due to their second offense under the current fine structure.
The SEC imposes fines on schools for field or court rushes, with LSU now having to pay a total of $955,000 since the fines were implemented in 2004 – the highest amount paid by any program in the league. Vanderbilt and Arkansas follow closely behind with $730,000 each.
The fines are paid directly to the visiting school, a change from previous structures where the funds went to the SEC’s scholarship program. LSU’s first violation under the current structure came in men’s basketball, while their last football field rush fine was in 2022 when they beat Alabama.
LSU’s recent field rush comes on the heels of Vanderbilt and Arkansas rushing their fields after victories over Alabama and Tennessee, resulting in fines of $250,000 and $100,000 respectively. The SEC has fined various schools over the years for similar infractions, with amounts ranging from $5,000 to $250,000.
Despite the excitement of the win, LSU will have to pay the hefty fine as a consequence of their fans’ actions on the field.
