What We Know About the Atlanta Shooting Near the CDC and Emory University

A gunman opened fire in Atlanta on Friday near the CDC and Emory University, resulting in the death of a DeKalb County police officer responding to the active shooter situation. The incident began around 4:50 p.m., prompting both institutions to lock down. Officers discovered the injured officer at the scene, who was later pronounced dead at the hospital. The officer, who left behind a wife and three children, was hailed for his commitment to community service.

The suspect, found on the second floor of a CVS Pharmacy building, had gunshot wounds, but it remains unclear whether they were self-inflicted or caused by police. No civilians were injured during the incident, although four individuals sought treatment for anxiety-related symptoms. CDC Director Susan Monarez reported that bullets struck four of the CDC’s buildings, but no injuries were reported there.

Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens indicated that the investigation into the shooter’s motives is ongoing. He mentioned that the suspect was “known” and had “interests” that require further investigation. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is leading the inquiry.

Governor Brian Kemp condemned the shooting, emphasizing the alarming frequency of such violent incidents in Georgia, while expressing gratitude to first responders. U.S. Senator Raphael Warnock also expressed his sorrow over the event, highlighting the need for a national discussion on gun violence. This incident marks the second shooting in Georgia within a week, following an active-duty soldier’s attack at Fort Stewart, which left five service members injured.
