Alabama Delegation Divided on Trump’s Tax and Spending Bill
Washington, D.C. — The U.S. House of Representatives narrowly passed President Donald Trump’s comprehensive tax and spending bill, with Alabama’s congressional delegation largely split along party lines. The legislation passed 215-214, enabling tax breaks, increased defense spending, and significant cuts to healthcare and food assistance programs before proceeding to the Senate.
All five of Alabama’s Republican representatives supported the measure, highlighting the anticipated benefits for hardworking families. Rep. Robert Aderholt praised the bill’s potential to deliver tax relief and bolster border security. Fellow Republican Rep. Barry Moore, initially skeptical, ultimately backed the bill, citing it as a vital victory for families that extends tax cuts and strengthens defense initiatives.
Conversely, Alabama’s two Democratic representatives vocally opposed the legislation, emphasizing its detrimental effects on vulnerable populations. Rep. Shomari Figures raised concerns on the House floor, arguing that the cuts to healthcare and food assistance could leave many Alabamians hungry and without coverage. “Is their money being longer worth people in my district’s lives being shorter?” he questioned.
Key provisions of the bill include a nearly $700 billion cut to Medicaid, which could affect up to 67,000 individuals in Alabama, and a $267 billion reduction in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), potentially impacting over 752,000 residents. The legislation also introduces stricter work requirements for Medicaid and SNAP, raising the age limit for exemptions.
Now heading to the Senate, where potential revisions are expected, Republican leaders are optimistic about finalizing the package by July 4. Sen. Tommy Tuberville expressed hope for swift passage, emphasizing the need for tax cuts and reform in federal spending.
As debates continue, the anticipated impacts of this legislative package on Alabama’s economy and residents remain a focal point for stakeholders statewide.
