Wes Allen and John Merrill engage in heated dispute over Alabama voter registration lists, tensions escalate

Former Alabama Secretary of State John Merrill has criticized current Secretary of State Wes Allen in a recent op-ed column, accusing Allen of misleading the public about the state’s voter registration system. Merrill claims that Allen has exaggerated his efforts to update the voter rolls and has presented a misleading picture of the situation. This public rebuke marks a significant escalation in the ongoing political conflict between the two officials.
Allen, who took office in 2023, withdrew Alabama from the Electronic Registration Information Center (ERIC) and introduced the Alabama Voter Integrity Database (AVID) as a state-based alternative. Allen claims that AVID has identified over one million voter records for updates or removal, including 500,000 ineligible voters. Merrill, however, has questioned the accuracy of these numbers and accused Allen of distorting the facts for political gain.
In response, Allen fired back, accusing Merrill of sending out lies and attacks on his office and character. He criticized Merrill’s behavior during his time in office and highlighted the work his administration has done to register new voters in Alabama. This exchange highlights the ongoing tensions between the two former and current Secretaries of State and hints at further political clashes in the future.
