Press Release: Ashland Manufacturer Takes Stand Against Unfair Trade Practices
Ashland, Alabama – In a small town where craftsmanship meets community spirit, Stephen Wellborn, co-owner of Wellborn Cabinet, Inc., is on a mission to protect American jobs and an iconic industry from foreign competition. As a founding executive of the American Kitchen Cabinet Alliance (AKCA), Wellborn advocates for fair trade practices against the tidal wave of international subsidization and dumping.
Wellborn Cabinet, a family-owned manufacturer since 1961, has seen its workforce shrink from 2,200 to approximately 1,300 over the last five years due to market pressures from foreign competitors, particularly from China. These companies, bolstered by government subsidies, sell cabinets below production costs, undermining American manufacturers who pride themselves on quality and local employment.
“We just need a level playing field,” Wellborn insists, highlighting the need for protective tariffs against unfairly priced imports. The collapse of local manufacturing not only jeopardizes jobs but also erodes community values and economic stability. He emphasizes, “Cabinetry is fundamental; it’s about housing families and strengthening communities.”
The AKCA, representing over 250,000 American jobs, is advocating for the U.S. government to impose substantial tariffs on imported cabinetry through a Section 232 national security investigation. This effort has garnered support from key politicians, including Senators Katie Britt and Tommy Tuberville, who recognize the critical nature of preserving domestic manufacturing.
“What’s at stake is not just an industry, but the American Dream itself,” Wellborn asserts. “This isn’t about re-establishing lost jobs; it’s about saving what’s still here.” He urges lawmakers to act decisively to ensure that American craftsmanship continues to thrive in a country where it still matters.
In a world where the odds seem stacked against him, Wellborn remains hopeful. “Every cabinet tells a story, and every job matters. Let’s give honest people a fair shot at success.”
