We’ll Need Amendments to Your Trump Agenda Bill

House Republicans are working to secure votes for a significant legislation package aligned with President Donald Trump’s agenda, but Senate Republicans are signaling that the proposed bill will face substantial modifications. Sen. John Hoeven of North Dakota emphasized that the legislation emerging from the House cannot pass the Senate without alterations, citing broad agreement on various issues but acknowledging the need for changes on multiple fronts.

Sen. Ron Johnson of Wisconsin has publicly criticized the House bill, expressing concerns about its potential impact on the U.S. budget deficit, predicting an increase of $4 trillion. Other Republican senators have echoed similar concerns, particularly regarding Medicaid cuts and energy funding slashes contained in the bill. Sen. Josh Hawley of Missouri has warned against cuts to Medicaid, which he believes could harm rural hospitals, expressing his opposition to the House bill in its present form.

Concerns also extend to clean energy provisions within the bill, especially the attempt to repeal subsidies and tax credits established under the Inflation Reduction Act, which had previously been seen as beneficial to national and economic security. Sen. Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, alongside other Republicans, is advocating for caution around these energy tax credits to protect investment and job creation in the sector.

Moreover, Senate Republicans are looking to revise the House’s proposals regarding spectrum auction authority and federal IT systems updates, pushing for a more comprehensive approach. Speaker Mike Johnson aims to move the amended bill through the House Budget Committee soon, with hopes to pass it before Memorial Day, but it remains clear that Senate Republicans are prepared to reshape significant elements of the proposed legislation.
