Vietnam’s Most Powerful Storm of the Year, Typhoon Yagi, Leaves Dozens Dead in its Wake

Typhoon Yagi struck northern Vietnam over the weekend, causing landslides and floods that left at least 24 people dead and nearly 300 injured. This powerful storm disrupted power and telecommunications in areas such as Quang Ninh and Haiphong. The National Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting warned of continued flooding and landslides, with rainfall totals ranging from 8.2 to 17.1 inches in some regions.

The storm weakened to a tropical depression on Sunday, but had already caused significant damage. A family of four in Hoa Binh province was killed when a hillside collapsed on their house. Other storm-related incidents included fatalities from falling trees and drifting boats. In the Hoang Lien Son mountains, a landslide claimed the lives of six people, including a newborn baby and a one-year-old.

Ha Long Bay, a UNESCO world heritage site, was also affected, with fishers shocked as they surveyed the damage. The storm damaged nearly 3,300 houses and over 120,000 hectares of crops in northern Vietnam.

Before hitting Vietnam, Typhoon Yagi had already caused casualties in southern China and the Philippines. A study published in July suggested that typhoons in the region were becoming more severe due to climate change.

Authorities are working to respond to the damage caused by Typhoon Yagi and are urging residents to remain vigilant as the threat of further flooding continues.
