Veteran Representative Nadler steps down from top Democratic position on Judiciary panel following contested bid

Longtime Rep. Jerry Nadler, D-N.Y., announced he is dropping his bid to remain the top Democrat on the Judiciary Committee for the next two years and endorsed Rep. Jamie Raskin, D-Md., who had recently announced his challenge for the position. Nadler cited the growing danger posed by the return of Donald Trump as a reason for his decision and expressed confidence in Raskin’s ability to lead the committee in confronting these threats. Nadler, who has been the ranking member since 2019, has decided not to run for the position in the 119th Congress but will remain an active member of the committee. Having served in Congress since 1992, Nadler has had some health scares but was easily re-elected in November. His endorsement of Raskin comes as a surprise to many, as Raskin had initially challenged Nadler for the role. The New York Times was the first to report Nadler’s decision to drop out of the race. The position on the Judiciary Committee will be critical in providing oversight of the FBI and Justice Department under the incoming Trump administration, making the role of ranking member crucial in the current political climate.
