Birmingham Police Department Appoints Interim Deputy Chief
Birmingham, AL – Mayor Randall L. Woodfin announced the appointment of Captain Raymond Cochran as the interim deputy chief of Patrol Operations for the Birmingham Police Department (BPD) on Monday. This change comes after the retirement of Deputy Chief Onree Pruitt and the announcement of Assistant Chief Edmond Hanks’ retirement, a position that will remain unfilled for the time being.
Captain Cochran’s impressive 36-year tenure with the BPD includes leadership roles as commander in various divisions, such as the South Precinct, Narcotics Division, Crimes Against Property Division, and Tactical Operations Division. Most recently, he acted as deputy chief of Patrol Operations, showcasing his capability in managing the department’s key operational functions.
In addition to his extensive police experience, Cochran boasts a commendable military background as a veteran of Operation Desert Storm and Operation Enduring Freedom, having served 29 years in the U.S. Army Reserve. He has completed multiple military leadership programs and holds a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from Miles College.
Cochran joins the BPD command staff, which is led by Chief Michael Pickett and includes Deputy Chief of Administrative Operations Rodarius Mauldin, Deputy Chief of Investigative Operations Jeffrey Brown, and Interim Deputy Chief of Special Operations JaCorey Foster.
Mayor Woodfin expressed confidence in Cochran’s abilities to lead the Patrol Operations during this transitional period and emphasized the importance of strong leadership within the police force to continue serving the Birmingham community effectively.
