USPS Halts Arrival of Certain Packages from China and Hong Kong

The U.S. Postal Service has temporarily suspended all inbound packages from China and Hong Kong Posts, effective immediately and until further notice. The change does not impact letters and large envelopes from the same regions. This comes after President Trump signed executive orders imposing tariffs on several countries, including China. The orders also eliminate the de minimis provision, which allowed packages worth less than $800 to enter the U.S. duty free.

Chinese e-commerce firms like Shein and PDD Holdings’ Temu have heavily relied on the de minimis provision to offer low prices and grow their presence in the U.S. The suspension could lead to increased costs for sellers and higher prices for U.S. consumers. Trade officials and advocacy groups have argued that de minimis shipments have allowed illicit drugs like fentanyl to enter the U.S. through the mail.

Despite the suspension, Chinese e-commerce platforms like Temu and Shein have opened distribution centers in the U.S., allowing them to store goods locally and continue operations. The trend of opening U.S. warehouses for domestic distribution has been growing as companies seek to hedge against trade restrictions. This move could potentially allow Chinese e-commerce platforms to sustain growth in the U.S. amid the new tariffs and shipping restrictions.
