For the third consecutive year, the Hugh S. Branyon Backcountry Trail in Alabama has been voted as the best recreational trail in the country by USA Today readers. This network of trails stretches from Gulf Shores to Orange Beach through Gulf State Park, offering 26 trails across nine different ecosystems. The trail provides a variety of experiences, from trekking through wildflowers on the Rosemary Dunes trail to enjoying views from the overlook on the Gulf Oak Ridge trail.
Alabama State Parks Director, Matthew Capps, expressed excitement over the win, especially as it aligns with the Year of Alabama Trails celebration. The trail network, established in 2003, boasts 29 miles of trail within the park, with plans for expansion in the future. The trail is named after Hugh S. Branyon, who served as the park’s superintendent for over 30 years.
Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (ADCNR) Commissioner Chris Blankenship highlighted the importance of outdoor recreation and the positive impact trails have on communities and the economy. Alabama is also home to other notable trails, such as mountain biking and hiking trails at Chewacla State Park and the 18-mile hiking trail at the Forever Wild Perdido River Wildlife Management Area.
The recognition from USA Today readers underscores the growing importance of outdoor recreation and access to natural environments. ADCNR encourages residents and visitors to explore the diverse landscape of Alabama by hiking, biking, or paddling on one of the state’s many recreational trails. Georgia’s Silver Comet Trail, which connects to Alabama’s Chief Ladiga Trail at the state line, also made the top ten list of best recreational trails.
