The US Supreme Court has declined to halt Donald Trump’s upcoming sentencing for felony charges in a state court in New York involving hush money paid to a porn star. The decision came in response to a lawsuit by the state of Missouri claiming the case infringed on voters’ rights to hear from the Republican presidential nominee during his campaign for the White House. While conservative justices Thomas and Alito indicated they would have allowed Missouri to file the suit, they did not grant the push to lift the gag order or delay sentencing. New York Attorney General Letitia James argued against the suit, stating that there is no state-on-state conflict that would warrant Supreme Court intervention at this stage. Trump was convicted in May for falsifying business records to cover up a payment to Stormy Daniels before the 2016 election. He denies the charges and plans to appeal his conviction, citing a Supreme Court ruling that granted him immunity as a former president. The high court’s decision comes as Trump seeks re-election and faces legal challenges in various states. This ruling marks another chapter in the legal battles surrounding the former president leading up to the upcoming election.
