Update: Thunderstorms Forecasted in Lamar County This Saturday – Damaging Winds and Quarter-Sized Hail with Gusts Up to 60 mph

Severe Thunderstorm Warning Issued for Lamar County: Stay Safe

The National Weather Service has issued a severe thunderstorm warning for Lamar County, effective until 3:15 a.m. on Saturday. The warning indicates potential hazards, including quarter-sized hail and wind gusts reaching up to 60 mph. As of 3 a.m., severe thunderstorms were tracked from areas northwest of Guin to Beaverton, moving east at a brisk 40 mph.

Residents in impacted locations, including Cody, Vernon, Sulligent, and Pine Springs, should prepare for possible hail damage to vehicles and wind damage to roofs, siding, and trees. The weather service advises individuals to move to the lowest interior rooms of their homes for safety.

In addition to wind and hail, thunderstorms bring the risk of lightning, which strikes the U.S. about 25 million times a year. Approximately 20 fatalities occur annually due to lightning. As storms approach, the risk escalates, meaning vigilance is crucial. If thunder is heard, seek indoor shelter immediately and avoid using corded phones and electrical devices during the storm. Wait at least 30 minutes following the last thunder before resuming outdoor activities.

If caught outside without shelter, steer clear of open fields and isolated trees, and maintain distance from groups to prevent conducting electricity during strikes. Low-lying areas are safer for camping, but it’s important to remember that tents offer no protection against lightning.

Heavy rain can also create hazardous road conditions. Drivers are advised to maintain a safe distance, slow down, and use headlights for visibility. Watch for slick roads, especially within the first half-hour of rain.

As storm conditions persist, residents should stay informed through local weather updates and always prioritize safety first.
