Severe Thunderstorm Warning Issued for Madison County
Madison County, AL – The National Weather Service has issued a severe thunderstorm warning for Madison County, effective until 2:15 p.m. on Sunday. The storm, identified near Alabama A&M University, is moving east at 35 mph and is predicted to bring penny-sized hail and wind gusts reaching up to 60 mph.
Residents in the warning area, which includes Maysville, Huntsville, and the University of Alabama in Huntsville, are advised to seek shelter indoors immediately. The storm is accompanied by frequent lightning, posing additional risks; lightning strikes each year cause about 20 fatalities in the U.S., highlighting the importance of safety measures during thunderstorms.
For safety during this storm, the weather service recommends moving to an interior room on the lowest floor of your building and avoiding contact with corded phones and electrical devices. Outdoor activities should be postponed until at least 30 minutes after the last hail or thunder.
In the event of a thunderstorm while outdoors with no access to indoor shelter, people are advised to avoid open fields and tall trees, and to disperse if in a group for greater safety. Low-lying areas are preferred for shelter during a storm.
Additionally, heavy rain can lead to hazardous driving conditions. Motorists should exercise caution by maintaining safe distances, reducing speed, and increasing vigilance, especially during the first half-hour of rain when roads are most slippery.
Stay updated with local alerts and prepare to heed advice from authorities to ensure safety during severe weather events.
