Severe Thunderstorm Warning Issued for Multiple Alabama Counties
On Monday, the National Weather Service issued a severe thunderstorm warning set to last until 6:30 p.m., affecting Colbert, Franklin, Lauderdale, and Lawrence counties. The warning, triggered at 5:54 p.m., forecasts quarter-sized hail and wind gusts reaching up to 60 mph. A severe thunderstorm was detected over Underwood-Petersville, near Florence, moving southward at 10 mph. The weather service warned of potential hail damage to vehicles and wind damage to roofs, siding, and trees.
Areas impacted include Florence, Muscle Shoals, Sheffield, Tuscumbia, Killen, Town Creek, Littleville, Leighton, Courtland, and St. Florian. Residents are advised to seek refuge in an interior room on the lowest floor of a building as continuous cloud-to-ground lightning poses a significant risk. The National Weather Service emphasized that if thunder can be heard, lightning is close enough to strike.
Additionally, the risk of flash flooding due to torrential rainfall is rising. Motorists are urged not to drive through flooded roadways as swift-moving water can quickly become dangerous.
To ensure safety during thunderstorms, the public is recommended to establish a lightning safety plan, monitor changing weather conditions, and seek immediate shelter indoors when necessary. While indoors, avoid using corded phones or electrical appliances to reduce the risk of electrical surges, and wait at least 30 minutes after the last thunder before resuming outdoor activities.
During heavy rain, be cautious of swollen waterways, maintain a safe following distance while driving, and reduce speed to prevent skidding. The initial 30 minutes of rain pose the highest risk for slick roads due to combined elements, making vigilance crucial.
Stay informed and prioritize personal safety by adhering to these guidelines.
