Court documents reveal that the federal scrutiny began as early as August 2021, when Adams, then Brooklyn borough president, was expected to win the mayoral race. Adams claimed the probes were retaliatory for his critical remarks about former President Biden’s immigration policies.
The investigation garnered public attention in November 2023 when FBI agents seized Adams’ phones after an event. He faced charges of accepting illegal campaign contributions and free travel from individuals seeking influence, including a Turkish diplomat. However, following the transition to President Trump’s administration, Justice Department leadership recommended dropping the charges, asserting they impeded Adams’ cooperation in immigration enforcement efforts. This directive caused unrest among federal prosecutors, leading several, including Manhattan’s top prosecutor Danielle Sassoon, to resign rather than comply. A judge ultimately dismissed the case based on the Justice Department’s request.
Before the case’s halt, investigators were preparing to bring further charges against Adams for obstruction of justice. Documents also showed ongoing searches, including warrants for locations and devices related to the investigation, including searches at homes connected to Adams and his partner, Tracey Collins.
Adams’ lawyer condemned the prosecution as baseless and celebrated its dismissal as vindication for the mayor, who has maintained a cordial relationship with Trump since the charges were dropped. Despite the resolution of legal issues, Adams faces political uncertainty as he plans to run as an independent in the upcoming general election, choosing to skip the Democratic primary in June.
