UNLV Kicks Off New Era with Dan Mullen as Head Coach, but Faces Early Setback Against Idaho State
Las Vegas, NV – The UNLV Rebels embarked on a new chapter this season as they welcomed former SEC coach and ESPN analyst Dan Mullen as their head coach. The Rebels hosted Idaho State in Week 0, showcasing a promising opening drive that took them into the red zone.
The excitement quickly turned to disappointment, however, when quarterback Alex Orji fumbled the ball in the end zone on a 2nd-and-7 play, resulting in a touchback that handed possession to Idaho State. Orji, who joined UNLV after splitting quarterback duties at Michigan last season, possesses the ability to make plays with his legs, although he faced difficulties with passing in previous games.
Things took a turn for the worse for the Rebels when Idaho State capitalized on the turnover, moving down the field with ease. The Bengals executed an efficient six-play, 80-yard drive, taking a commanding 10-0 lead in the first quarter.
This season marks Mullen’s third head coaching opportunity, following stints at Mississippi State and Florida. He began his career at Mississippi State in 2009, later returning to Florida as head coach after previously serving as offensive coordinator under Urban Meyer. Mullen’s tenure at Florida ended in 2021, after which he joined ESPN as an analyst.
UNLV’s loss serves as an early test for Mullen and his ability to lead the Rebels as they strive for improvement this season. Fans and players alike will be eager to bounce back as they look to establish a strong foundation under their new coach. The team will aim to rebound quickly and regain momentum in the weeks to come.
