University of Alabama Faculty Senate Opposes Restrictions on Academic Freedom

The University of Alabama’s Faculty Senate has passed a resolution opposing state and federal measures aimed at curbing diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs, citing concerns over a "chilling effect" on teaching and campus speech. The resolution, backed by 45 out of 71 senators, urges university leaders to recommit to academic freedom and the First Amendment rights of all community members.
Faculty Senate President Matthew Hudnall emphasized that the resolution reflects not a political stance but a reaffirmation of the university’s educational mission.
