Alabama A&M University recently retracted an announcement that football player Medrick Burnett Jr. had passed away. The university initially shared a statement honoring Burnett as a remarkable young man, but later deleted it from their athletics department’s website. The retraction came after a representative from UAB hospital confirmed that Burnett was still alive and in stable condition. Burnett’s mother, Denise Burnett, also verified that her son was receiving treatment in a Birmingham hospital after being severely injured in a football game.
On October 26, Burnett, who plays linebacker, suffered a head-on-head collision during a game and had multiple brain bleeds and swelling. A GoFundMe campaign was launched to raise funds for temporary local housing for his parents, who live far away. The campaign has raised nearly $33,000 of its $100,000 goal.
The university expressed regret for disseminating false information about Burnett’s passing but is relieved to know he is alive and stable. Burnett’s family is planning to release a statement about the ordeal once the time is right. Overall, there has been an outpouring of support for Burnett and his family during this challenging time.
