United Airlines is increasing the thresholds to earn elite status in their MileagePlus program by about 25% next year. This is part of a trend among airlines to reward travelers based on how much they spend rather than how far they fly. Elite status comes with perks such as free upgrades, earlier boarding, and better seat selection. The lowest level status, Silver Premier, in 2025 will require customers to earn 5,000 premier qualifying points and fly 15 qualifying flights, up from 4,000 points and 12 flights. Travelers can also earn status by spending money, with the requirements going up to 6,000 points from 5,000. Customers can earn 1 point for every $1 spent on United flights and other qualifying flights. The changes in thresholds for other elite statuses like Gold, Platinum, and 1K are also increasing. This move is part of United’s efforts to increase profits and give an exclusive feel to their loyalty program. Airlines have struggled with accommodating high-spending customers, leading to crowded lounges and early boarding groups. Co-branded credit cards are an important revenue stream for airlines, as banks pay carriers when consumers use the cards. These changes will go into effect next year and the status requirements and perks earned will be valid until 2026.
