UNDP Hands Over Innovative Mines Eye Detection System to Ukraine’s Emergency Services
Mykolaiv, 21 June 2025 – The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), in partnership with the Government of Luxembourg, has officially transferred the Mines Eye aerial detection system to the State Emergency Service of Ukraine (SESU). This advanced unmanned technology aims to enhance the efficiency and safety of demining operations in a country laden with explosive remnants of war (ERW).
The handover ceremony, held at the SESU’s Mykolaiv base, marked the end of a pilot project designed to test this technological innovation in real-world demining scenarios. Attendees included SESU officials, the Mykolaiv Oblast Military Administration, and UNDP’s Acting Administrator, Mr. Haoliang Xu.
Mines Eye utilizes a combination of magnetometry and high-resolution aerial imaging, including visual and infrared sensors, to meticulously scan contaminated zones. The incorporation of artificial intelligence enables the detection of anti-tank mines even under vegetation, providing detailed mapping and anomaly reports for improved decision-making.
Mr. Xu underscored the significance of local ingenuity backed by global support in transforming humanitarian demining operations. He stated, "Our focus is clear: enabling access to land and restoring livelihoods through technology-driven solutions, allowing communities to reclaim their safety and potential."
During a five-month pilot, SESU demining teams scanned over 360 hectares in Kharkiv and Mykolaiv, areas heavily affected by mines. Vitalii Myroniuk, First Deputy Head of SESU, stressed that the technology allows for safe, quick surveys, minimizing risks to personnel.
Heorhii Reshetilov from the Mykolaiv Regional Administration added the system represents a breakthrough, crucial for reviving agricultural development after the devastation caused by landmines.
The Mines Eye system will be integrated into SESU operations nationwide, crucially supporting demining in challenging terrains.
Ukraine faces one of the world’s most serious mine contamination crises, with 138,000 square kilometers at risk. UNDP has initiated a technology-driven approach to tackle this emergency, including aerial systems and enhanced operational capacity.
