As the world grapples with the escalating effects of climate change, carbon capture and storage (CCS) technologies emerge as crucial solutions for mitigating greenhouse gas emissions. Human activity, particularly within the energy sector, contributes significantly to global emissions, with ten countries alone accounting for 60%.

Current carbon capture methods—pre-combustion, post-combustion, and oxy-combustion—offer different strategies for extracting carbon dioxide (CO2). These methods aim to either sequester CO2 underground in geological formations or find secondary uses, such as enhancing oil recovery or producing fuels.

Despite significant potential, the implementation of carbon capture projects is lagging. As of June 2023, only 20 CCS projects were under construction, overshadowed by ambitious global capacities projected to capture 400 metric tons of CO2 annually by 2030. The U.S. Department of Energy, alongside international partners, is supporting initiatives, with 45 countries undertaking CCS efforts.

Integration with renewable energy presents a promising avenue for carbon capture, reducing the carbon footprint of industries while overcoming challenges associated with the intermittency of renewable sources. Studies suggest collaboration between renewable power and CCS could yield high energy efficiency and negative greenhouse gas emissions.

However, economic and environmental concerns linger. The costs associated with CCS—ranging from $15 to $345 per metric ton of CO2—are noteworthy, and while governments promote regulatory incentives for emissions reductions, questions about the sustainability of these technologies remain. Various studies highlight increased water usage and the potential risk of CO2 leakage.

While carbon capture is not a panacea, it is an essential tool in combating climate change. Continuous research and technological advancements are critical to maximizing its effectiveness and minimizing environmental impacts.
