Major Ukrainian Drone Attack Claims Over 40 Russian Aircraft Ahead of Peace Talks
KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — In a significant escalation of hostilities, Ukraine has executed a drone attack that reportedly destroyed more than 40 Russian aircraft, deep within Russian territory. A Ukrainian security official, speaking anonymously, disclosed that the operation took 18 months to prepare and was overseen by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
The attack targeted multiple airfields, striking A-50, Tu-95, and Tu-22M aircraft—key components of Russia’s military capabilities, including long-range bombing and target coordination. Ukrainian drones were covertly transported in container trucks, launched using remote-controlled roofs that unveiled drones at the operation’s signal.
Russia’s Defense Ministry confirmed the strikes, indicating that they caused significant damage and fires in the Irkutsk region, as well as northern Murmansk, with attempts to repel attacks in the Amur region and other western territories.
The assault coincided with an announcement from Zelenskyy regarding a new round of direct peace talks scheduled in Istanbul, signaling Ukraine’s commitment to sovereignty. Zelenskyy appointed Defense Minister Rustem Umerov to lead the Ukrainian delegation and emphasized a proactive approach to safeguarding the nation.
In response, Russia launched its largest drone offensive to date, deploying 472 drones alongside missile strikes, leading to Ukrainian military casualties, including at least 12 fatalities from a strike on an army training unit. This attack prompted the resignation of Ukrainian army commander Mykhailo Drapatyi, a respected figure credited with territorial gains in the ongoing conflict.
As military pressures intensify, with Russian forces gaining ground in northern Sumy and focusing their efforts in Donetsk, the atmosphere remains charged ahead of the anticipated peace talks. Ukrainian authorities have ordered evacuations in vulnerable settlements as tensions escalate.
