Tuberville Champions Legislation to Fulfill Trump’s Promise of ‘No Tax on Overtime’

Tuberville and GOP Introduce Overtime Tax Relief Legislation

WASHINGTON — Senator Tommy Tuberville (R-AL) and fellow Republican lawmakers have introduced the Overtime Wages Tax Relief Act, aiming to fulfill former President Donald Trump’s promise to cut taxes for hardworking Americans. The proposed legislation enables tax deductions on overtime wages, offering up to $10,000 for individuals and $20,000 for married couples.

During a recent press conference, Tuberville emphasized the bill’s intent to support Americans like nurses and factory workers, stating, "It sends a message to the country that hard work matters." The deduction would start phasing out at $100,000 for individuals and $200,000 for couples, decreasing by $50 for every $1,000 above those thresholds.

Senator Roger Marshall (R-KS), the bill’s sponsor, mentioned that the legislation could form part of a larger tax reform package, aiming to slash federal spending while extending existing tax cuts. Current estimates from the Tax Foundation indicate the proposal could cost the federal government between $680 billion and $1.5 trillion over the next decade.

In Alabama, the state recently enacted an overtime exemption law, set to expire soon, that is projected to cost $345 million—much higher than original estimates. Alabama House Minority Leader Anthony Daniels (D-Huntsville) expressed that while he often disagrees with Tuberville, he supports pursuing bipartisan efforts to address overtime tax exemptions at the federal level.

Some GOP leaders in Alabama have indicated that federal tax cuts could prompt similar discussions at the state level. The legislative conversation on overtime tax exemptions is set to continue, with various stakeholders hoping to address complications concerning fraud and revenue projections.

The introduction of this legislation marks a significant step towards possible federal tax reform, emphasizing the need to reward America’s labor force while balancing fiscal responsibility.
