Press Article: Alabama Lawmakers Shine in Limited Government Index
The Institute for Legislative Analysis (ILA) has unveiled its inaugural Limited Government Index, recognizing U.S. Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-Auburn) and U.S. Rep. Barry Moore (R-Enterprise) for their commitment to limited government principles. Both lawmakers topped their respective legislative bodies, with Tuberville earning an impressive score of 91.58% in the Senate and Moore leading the House with a score of 91.75%.
The ILA hails this index as the first national scorecard anchored in the limited government principles enshrined in the U.S. Constitution. It encompasses an extensive analysis of 122 distinct policies and utilizes a more comprehensive selection of roll calls compared to other national advocacy groups’ scorecards. The organization aims to foster transparency in Congress and state legislatures, adhering to a strict philosophy of limited government.
In the Senate, Tuberville led fellow Republican Sen. Katie Britt, who garnered a score of 67.86%. In the House, Moore’s performance was closely followed by U.S. Rep. Gary Palmer (R-Hoover), who scored 83.59%. Conversely, U.S. Rep. Terri Sewell (D-Birmingham) recorded the lowest score at 4.66%, and U.S. Rep. Mike Rogers (R-Saks) received the lowest score among Republicans at 69.11%. Collectively, Moore edged out Tuberville in the overall rankings, while Britt ranked lowest among Alabama’s Republican federal legislators.
Notably, the scorecard did not include Alabama’s newest congressional member, U.S. Rep. Shomari Figures (D-Mobile), due to insufficient voting data since he assumed office earlier this year.
The ILA continues to promote limited government ideals to enhance accountability within government operations. For more updates, subscribe to our newsletter for daily insights.
