Senator Tuberville Backs Trump’s Plan to Eliminate Taxes on Social Security Benefits
MONTGOMERY, Ala. — U.S. Senator Tommy Tuberville voiced strong support Wednesday for President-elect Donald Trump’s commitment to eliminate taxes on Social Security benefits, citing the program’s looming insolvency as a critical issue. In an interview with Alabama Daily News, Tuberville argued that taxing benefits is unjust, as Americans contribute to Social Security throughout their working lives only to face taxation when they need it the most.
“President Trump’s promise to exempt Social Security from taxation will provide significant relief to many Americans,” Tuberville stated during a press call. He emphasized his willingness to collaborate with Trump on reforms aimed at stopping the double taxation that has plagued the program for decades. Tuberville’s previous criticism of Social Security, labeling it a “scam,” went viral earlier this year and has gained renewed attention, partly due to mentions by high-profile figures, including Elon Musk.
Concerns over the future of Social Security are well-founded, with the Congressional Budget Office projecting insolvency by 2034 unless changes are made. Contributing factors include decreasing birth rates and the structure of the payroll tax cap, which has not kept pace with rising income inequality. As of 2025, incomes exceeding $176,100 will not be subject to Social Security taxes.
Although Tuberville did not address potential adjustments to the payroll tax cap during the interview, he reiterated the urgent need for reform, emphasizing Americans’ right to access the funds they’ve paid into the program. “It is a huge part of our budget each year, and people deserve a return on their contributions,” he concluded.
