Two key advisers to former President Donald Trump, Chris LaCivita and Tony Fabrizio, are forming a super PAC aimed at unseating Rep. Thomas Massie, a Kentucky Republican known for opposing Trump. Massie, a libertarian who has served Kentucky’s 4th Congressional District since 2012, has clashed with Trump over several issues, including Trump’s recent strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities.
Despite previously receiving Trump’s endorsement in 2022, Massie’s continued opposition, particularly on foreign policy, has made him a target. He is known for his stance against U.S. military involvement in conflicts without congressional approval. He recently introduced a war powers resolution with Rep. Ro Khanna to prohibit American involvement in Iran, stating that such executive actions are unconstitutional.
In response to Trump’s military decisions, Massie criticized them as unconstitutional on social media, prompting Trump to label him as a “simple-minded grandstander” and urge that he be removed from the GOP. Trump expressed intentions to actively support a challenger in the Republican primary, indicating dissatisfaction with Massie’s performance.
Currently, only one Republican, Niki Lee Ethington, has filed to run against Massie. Ethington, a recent nursing graduate without prior public office experience, represents a potential new face in the race. Massie has retaliated against Trump’s criticisms by sharing a fundraising appeal and emphasizing his commitment to America First principles, countering Trump’s calls for regime change in Iran.
Trump’s political influence remains strong, having previously targeted Republican lawmakers who voted to impeach him, resulting in significant losses in their respective primaries.
