Trump to Speak at University of Alabama Commencement Ceremony

Trump to Address Alabama Students Amid Controversy

In a special event preceding graduation ceremonies, former President Donald Trump is set to speak at the University of Alabama, where he previously secured a notable 64% of the vote in 2024. Though the White House has referred to the event as a commencement address, attendance is optional for graduating students. Trump will share the stage with former Crimson Tide football coach Nick Saban.

However, Trump’s visit has not come without dissent. Both the Alabama NAACP and the University of Alabama College Democrats have expressed strong opposition to his appearance. The College Democrats have organized a counter-rally titled “Tide Against Trump,” featuring former presidential candidate Beto O’Rourke and former U.S. Senator Doug Jones, the last Democrat to hold statewide office in the state.

The Alabama NAACP has criticized Trump’s policies, claiming they negatively impact universities and particularly students of color. NAACP President Benard Simelton urged students, especially those of color, to forgo the speech, advocating instead for time spent reflecting on inclusivity in America.

This event marks Trump’s second trip to Alabama this week, following a rally in Michigan celebrating 100 days in office. Since his inauguration on January 20, 2021, Trump’s public appearances have been mostly limited to impromptu news conferences from the Oval Office.

After this engagement in Alabama, Trump is expected to head to Florida for a long weekend at his Mar-a-Lago resort. He is also scheduled to deliver a commencement address at the U.S. Military Academy in West Point next month.
