Former President Donald Trump stated that if he were to be re-elected in November, he would immediately fire special counsel Jack Smith, who has brought federal indictments against him. Trump made these remarks in an interview with conservative radio host Hugh Hewitt, where he also said he believes he has immunity at the Supreme Court and called Smith a “crooked person.” Trump expressed confidence that even if Democrats regain control of the House, they would not impeach him for firing Smith.
Firing Smith as special counsel could potentially end the federal government’s prosecution against Trump, though Smith is still pursuing an election interference case against him in Washington, D.C. Despite Trump’s attempts to delay court proceedings citing presidential immunity, evidence has been released in the case.
Trump has criticized Judge Tanya Chutkan and Smith, leading to a gag order being issued against him. Last year, Trump warned that Justice Department officials could end up in a mental institution if he is re-elected. In response to the possibility of Trump dismissing an active criminal prosecution against himself, Rep. Adam Schiff introduced legislation that would prevent a sitting president from doing so, though this measure is unlikely to advance in the Republican-controlled House.
