Trump set to target Harris during first rally after Biden drops out of 2024 race

Former President Donald Trump held his first public campaign rally since President Joe Biden dropped out of the 2024 presidential race, leaving Trump to focus on his likely new opponent, Vice President Kamala Harris. Trump’s rally in North Carolina showed his concern about keeping the swing state in his column this November. He has been ramping up his criticism of Harris, characterizing her as more radical than Biden and blaming her for the Biden administration’s failures, especially on border security.

Republicans have quietly expressed concerns about Harris nullifying a portion of their party’s argument in favor of Trump’s vitality and vigor. With Trump now being the oldest nominee at 78, Harris at 59 may appeal to younger voters crucial in a close general election. North Carolina, a state Trump carried in his previous campaigns, is expected to be a battleground once again.

The event in Charlotte was Trump’s second rally since an assassination attempt in July and the first since the resignation of Secret Service director Kimberly Cheatle, who took responsibility for the security lapse that occurred during the Pennsylvania rally. Harris, on the other hand, is considering North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper as a possible running mate. Cooper, who is term-limited, is facing a competitive race to replace him, with Republican Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson being the first Black major party nominee for governor in North Carolina. The Charlotte rally, like the one in Grand Rapids, Michigan, was held indoors.
