Trump Addresses University of Alabama Graduates Amid Controversy
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) — President Donald Trump delivered a spirited commencement address to graduates at the University of Alabama, blending motivational advice with campaign-style rhetoric. Amid a supportive crowd, Trump proclaimed the graduates as "the first graduating class of the golden age of America," but quickly veered into familiar topics, claiming that the U.S. had been "ripped off" before his presidency.
During the speech, Trump criticized transgender participation in sports, even mimicking a female weightlifter, and reiterated unfounded claims about the 2020 election, describing it as "rigged." He also took aim at the judicial system, asserting that judges were obstructing his agenda. Despite the political overtones, Trump took a moment to offer ten pieces of life advice, including “Think of yourself as a winner” and “Never, ever give up,” urging graduates to push their limits.
University President Stuart Bell had earlier emphasized the significance of the ceremony as a celebration of civic leadership. While praising Trump’s presence, many students expressed mixed feelings. Graduating senior Emily Appel described the visit as a "cherry on top" of her college experience, while biology junior Aidan Meyers voiced disappointment in Trump’s invitation, condemning his past treatment of academia.
In response to Trump’s visit, the College Democrats organized a counter-rally. High-profile speakers, including former U.S. Senator Doug Jones and ex-presidential candidate Beto O’Rourke, condemned Trump’s divisive rhetoric and called for civic engagement among students.
After the Alabama event, Trump is set to continue his schedule in Florida, followed by a commencement address at West Point later this month.
