Trump fires National Archives chief

President Donald Trump has dismissed the head of the National Archives, Colleen Shogan, following through on a promise to change leadership after the agency was involved in a criminal case accusing Trump of mishandling classified documents. Shogan was fired at Trump’s direction, with no reason cited for her dismissal. The National Archives did not provide a response, and the White House did not comment on who would replace Shogan. The agency had alerted the Justice Department about Trump’s failure to return requested records, leading to a criminal investigation in 2022. Trump eventually returned some records but kept others, leading to a criminal case against him. The case was dismissed by a Trump-appointed federal judge due to concerns about the special counsel’s appointment. Since taking office, the Trump administration has dismissed officials involved in investigations against the president, including career lawyers and FBI officials. Two groups of FBI agents have sued the DOJ, alleging they were targeted for dismissal based on a survey they were instructed to fill out.
