Trump Delivers Political Speech While Offering Advice to University of Alabama Graduates

Trump Addresses University of Alabama Graduates Amid Protests

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — In a speech delivered during a special event at the University of Alabama on Thursday, President Donald Trump shared motivational messages with graduates, but interspersed his remarks with controversial critiques of social issues and his political opponents.

Addressing a supportive crowd in the deep-red state, Trump described the graduates as the first of "the golden age of America," but quickly veered into familiar political territory, claiming the country had been “ripped off” prior to his presidency. He asserted that the past four years, when he was out of power, represented an aberration for the U.S.

Trump included a striking impersonation of a transgender weightlifter while condemning their involvement in sports, alongside accusations of judicial interference in his agenda. He reiterated false claims regarding the 2020 election being “rigged” and praised his successes, including immigration policies.

Offering ten pieces of advice to graduates, he urged them to “think of yourself as a winner” and “never, ever give up,” asserting that they were never too young for success. "Now is the time to work harder than you’ve ever worked before," he emphasized.

University President Stuart Bell initially framed the night as a celebration of the graduates. However, Trump’s remarks drew significant backlash, highlighted by a counter-rally called “Tide Against Trump,” featuring former presidential candidate Beto O’Rourke and ex-Senator Doug Jones. Protesters criticized Trump for what they saw as an inappropriate focus on grievance rather than academic achievement.

Despite the divisions, many students expressed honor at having Trump speak, seeing it as a historic moment. After the event in Alabama, Trump is set to continue his schedule in Florida and later, address the U.S. Military Academy at West Point.
