Trump Delivers Controversial Speech to University of Alabama Graduates

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — President Donald Trump delivered a provocative speech to graduates at the University of Alabama on Thursday, mixing congratulatory remarks with critiques of political opponents, judges, and social issues. The Republican former president characteristically took aim at transgender athletes, claiming their participation in sports is unfair, while also accusing judges of hindering his political agenda.

“You’re the first graduating class of the golden age of America,” he proclaimed, contrasting this message with a lament about America being “ripped off” before his presidency. Trump asserted that the challenges faced during his absence from power were merely an “aberration.”

While the university’s president, Stuart Bell, emphasized the importance of academic inquiry and public service, Trump quickly transitioned into a campaign-style monologue promoting his policy successes and grievances against the media. He falsely reiterated claims about the 2020 election being "rigged."

Despite the controversial nature of his remarks, attendees expressed enthusiasm for Trump’s presence. Graduates like Emily Appel and Sophie Best voiced their appreciation, viewing the event as a historic moment and an opportunity to connect with a significant political figure.

However, Trump’s appearance wasn’t without protest. A counter-rally labeled “Tide Against Trump,” featured speakers like former U.S. Sen. Doug Jones, who criticized the university for allowing Trump to speak. The rally gathered hundreds, expressing concerns about Trump’s impact on democracy and academia.

The Alabama NAACP also condemned Trump’s appearance, arguing that his policies have detrimental effects on students, particularly minorities. Following the Tuscaloosa event, Trump is scheduled to speak at the U.S. Military Academy, continuing his engagement with national audiences.
