Former President Donald Trump’s campaign has requested additional security measures for Trump due to increased threats against his life. The campaign has asked for military assets, including armored cars, protection while flying, and temporary airspace restrictions. White House Chief of Staff Jeff Zients connected the campaign with Department of Homeland Security and Secret Service leadership to address the requests. Despite reports that the campaign requested special forces service members to protect Trump, it was actually the Secret Service that requested special operations forces to prevent potential drone attacks.
Trump has faced alleged assassination attempts and assassination threats, prompting the campaign to use additional evasive tactics. Trump’s ally, Rep. Mike Waltz, has requested the use of planes that detect and deter threats for the campaign. The Secret Service has made enhancements to its operations since the attempted assassination, including providing high levels of protection to the former president. The Department of Defense regularly provides support for Trump’s protection, including explosive ordnance disposal, canine units, and airlift transportation.
The Pentagon and Secret Service are concerned that providing more assets would violate federal laws restricting the use of the military for domestic purposes. In response to increased threats, Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin approved increased support for candidates around the nation, overseen by U.S. Northern Command, including providing protection against chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear threats.
Overall, the Trump campaign’s requests for additional security measures have been met with some inaction, although the Secret Service and Department of Defense are providing enhanced protection for the former president.
