Trump Nominates Sean Duffy for Transportation Secretary Amid Cabinet Announcements
WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (AP) — President-elect Donald Trump has announced former Wisconsin Rep. Sean Duffy as his nominee for transportation secretary, further shaping his Cabinet. Duffy, a notable reality TV figure and Trump’s vocal supporter on media platforms, served in Congress for nearly nine years, including a tenure on the Financial Services Committee as its chairman for the subcommittee on insurance and housing. After leaving Congress in 2019, Duffy transitioned to a role as co-host of Fox Business’s "The Bottom Line."
In Trump’s announcement, he highlighted Duffy’s connections and experience, stating that the former congressman would focus on enhancing the nation’s infrastructure and elevating the travel experience for Americans through safety, efficiency, and innovation. Duffy, who has a family of nine children, previously declined a bid for Wisconsin governor, citing family obligations.
Duffy’s nomination marks the second appointment of a Fox-affiliated host to Trump’s Cabinet, following the selection of Pete Hegseth for defense secretary. With a background as a lumberjack athlete and former special prosecutor, Duffy made his political debut during the tea party wave in 2010, becoming known for his unique campaign ads showcasing his lumberjack heritage.
Should Duffy’s nomination be confirmed, he will lead the Transportation Department during a critical period marked by rising traffic fatalities and the introduction of autonomous vehicle technologies amidst shifting regulations. Trump has expressed skepticism about electric vehicles, potentially indicating a cautious approach towards the transition from gasoline to electric cars. Notably, Trump’s administration may seek to dismantle incentives for EV purchases, emphasizing a focus on traditional transport sectors while echoing concerns about the quality of America’s infrastructure.
