At a recent meeting of the Jackson County Master Gardeners, Park manager Carl Barnes provided an update on tree damage in the area caused by windstorms in 2009 and tornadoes in 2011. The group announced plans to plant trees in the park in celebration of its 30th anniversary in 2012. Jerry Akins also presented on plant propagation during the meeting.
The Master Gardeners recognized Jack Remick for becoming a Master Gardener and presented him with a certificate commemorating this achievement. Sheila Reed from the National Park Service will be the guest speaker at the next meeting in February, where she will discuss wild edible plants and berries.
For those interested in joining the Master Gardeners organization, the next class is scheduled to begin in March. Those seeking more information on how to get involved should contact Mike Sims at the Jackson County Extension Office.
The efforts of the Jackson County Master Gardeners to address tree damage and plant new trees in the area are a testament to their commitment to environmental conservation and beautification. With the upcoming guest speaker and opportunities to join the organization, there is much to look forward to in the coming months for members and potential new recruits.
