Tornado Touches Down in Covington County Amid Storms
In a series of storms that swept through Alabama on Tuesday, the National Weather Service (NWS) confirmed the touchdown of a preliminary EF-0 tornado in Covington County, southeast of Andalusia. The tornado struck around 12:06 a.m. CST, producing winds of up to 80 mph.
The tornado originated near the Babbie community, traveling a brief distance of 0.3 miles and spanning 20 yards wide. Its first signs were noted at the intersection of Two Boys Lane and Whatley Road, where it damaged a residential property near Cantaline Bridge Road. The storm tore off an awning and carport but, fortunately, no injuries have been reported.
This tornado is notable as it marks the 42nd tornado reported in Alabama for the year 2024, and the first since June, according to NWS. Furthermore, the NWS in Birmingham had issued a tornado warning for another storm in Hale County the same day; however, that event did not result in any reported damage.
As severe weather continues to be a concern in the region, the storm survey results serve as a reminder of the potential for violent weather during the spring season. Residents are encouraged to stay informed and prepared as storm systems move through the area.
For ongoing updates on local weather conditions and further storm reports, residents can consult the National Weather Service’s website.
