Tommy Tuberville Fears Key Aspect of Trump’s ‘Big Beautiful Bill’ Could Harm Alabama

Sen. Tuberville expresses concerns over Alabama’s affordability of SNAP changes in pending legislation

Senator Tommy Tuberville has voiced significant concerns regarding Alabama’s ability to absorb increased costs stemming from the controversial “One Big Beautiful Bill” currently under consideration in the Senate. Announcing his candidacy for governor last week, Tuberville highlighted the potential implications of the bill, championed by former President Trump, on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), previously known as food stamps.

In a recent interview with Politico, Tuberville stated, “Everybody that’s going to be in state government is going to be concerned about it. I don’t know whether we can afford it or not.” In Alabama, approximately 750,000 residents relied on SNAP benefits during the last fiscal year, totaling nearly $1.8 billion, according to the Alabama Department of Human Resources.

The current federal setup covers full benefit costs, with states responsible for half of administrative expenses. However, Trump’s proposed legislation would transfer more financial responsibility to the states, raising alarms among local advocates. According to Alabama Arise, a nonprofit focused on assisting low-income families, Alabama could experience added annual costs of up to $300 million as a result of the bill.

Robyn Hyden, Executive Director of Alabama Arise, warned that without the necessary legislative funding, the state might need to significantly reduce or even eliminate SNAP benefits for nearly 800,000 participants statewide, which would exacerbate hunger and harm local economies.

As the bill advances—having already passed the House by a narrow margin of 215-214—Tuberville is contemplating advocating for amendments that would reduce the financial burden on the states. This comprehensive piece of legislation, exceeding 1,000 pages, aims to cut federal spending and prolong tax cuts instituted during Trump’s initial term.
