Thunderstorms with Penny-Sized Hail and 50 MPH Gusts Forecasted for Southwest Alabama This Sunday

Severe Thunderstorm Alert Issued for Clarke, Wilcox, and Monroe Counties

Clarke, Wilcox, and Monroe Counties – The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a weather alert at 12:04 p.m. on Sunday for strong thunderstorms projected to impact the area until 12:45 p.m. Residents should prepare for wind gusts of up to 50 mph and penny-sized hail (0.75 inches). The alert encompasses locations including Camden, Pine Hill, Vredenburgh, and Yellow Bluff.

According to NWS, Doppler radar has detected strong thunderstorms developing along a line extending from six miles west of Dannelly Reservoir to near Wayne, advancing east at 30 mph. Residents are cautioned that gusty winds may cause tree limbs to fall and could lead to minor damage to outdoor objects.

Safety precautions are essential during such storms. If you are outdoors, the NWS advises seeking shelter inside a sturdy structure. When indoors, avoid using corded phones, electrical appliances, and plumbing fixtures, and stay away from windows and doors due to the risk of electrical surges from lightning strikes.

As thunderstorms carry a heightened risk of lightning, individuals are encouraged to prepare a lightning safety plan and remain vigilant. Lightning strikes approximately 25 million times annually in the U.S., causing about 20 fatalities each year.

In the event of heavy rainfall, the NWS also emphasizes safe driving practices to navigate treacherous road conditions. These include maintaining a safe following distance, reducing speed, avoiding abrupt stops, and ensuring enhanced visibility by using headlights.

Residents are urged to stay informed about weather updates and heed local authorities’ advice to ensure safety during adverse weather conditions.
