The SS United States, a historic ocean liner, arrives in Alabama for its final destination

Residents and photographers flocked to Dauphin Island in Alabama on Monday to witness the historic ocean-liner SS United States being towed into Mobile. The 1,000-foot ship is set to undergo preparations at the Modern American Recycling & Repair Services facility before being sunk off the Florida Gulf Coast to create the world’s largest artificial reef. The ship, known for its speed and hosting of celebrities and presidents in the 1950s and 60s, is expected to become a tourism destination. Some preservation groups are still fighting to save the ship from sinking.

Local residents, like Dan Rounds and Elizabeth Fowle, were excited to witness the ship’s arrival, while others, like Priscella Teal and her son Zayden, saw it as a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Saundra Maurin supported the ship’s transformation into an artificial reef, noting its potential benefits for sea life.

Despite efforts to save the ship, which has changed ownership multiple times since the late 1970s, it is set to be sunk off the coast of Florida. The SS United States’ journey has garnered widespread media interest due to its rich history, with some onlookers learning about the ship’s past as news of its arrival spread.

Students Ari Henderson and Katie Nguyen, who were off school for Mardi Gras, visited Dauphin Island to take selfies and commemorate Henderson’s birthday. They planned to research the SS United States’ history after witnessing its arrival.
