The search for University of Pittsburgh student Sudiksha Konanki, who vanished during a spring break trip in the Dominican Republic, has entered its fourth day. The 20-year-old junior was last seen entering the beach of the hotel she was staying at in Punta Cana in the early morning hours of March 6. Konanki and her five friends arrived in the Dominican Republic on March 3 and were staying at the same hotel. Police have initiated a search using drones, helicopters, divers, boats, and canine units. They believe she disappeared around 4:15 a.m. after entering the beach with her friends. Her friends returned to the hotel, but she did not.
Authorities are interviewing her friends and a young man who was at the beach around that time to uncover more information. The hotel where she was staying, RIU Hotels, is cooperating with the search efforts and supporting authorities. Her family, who resides in Virginia, is traveling to Punta Cana. The Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office in Virginia is involved in the investigation and working with authorities in the Dominican Republic and the U.S. State Department. The FBI is ready to assist if needed.
Konanki’s friends from college have stayed back to aid in the search. Authorities are considering all possibilities, from accidental disappearance to foul play. The University of Pittsburgh and the Indian Embassy in the Dominican Republic are also involved in the investigation. The search efforts are ongoing, and authorities are hopeful for a positive outcome.
