The NFL has announced that Sony’s Hawk-Eye technology will be used as the league’s primary method for measuring the line to gain starting in the 2025 season. This new tracking system was tested in the 2024 preseason and regular season, showing a significant reduction in measurement time compared to the chain gang method. The technology requires six cameras for the virtual line-to-gain, along with additional cameras for improved replay angles.
The Hawk-Eye system does not track the ball, but rather monitors skeletal points on a player’s body to determine if a first down was reached. Despite on-field officials still being responsible for spotting the ball, this new technology will speed up the pace of play by providing instant notification of first downs.
All 30 NFL stadiums, as well as international stadiums hosting NFL games, will be equipped with 32 cameras each to support the system. The league plans to continue testing the technology during UFL games played in NFL stadiums this spring. While there may be some controversy surrounding the use of this technology, it aims to improve accuracy and efficiency in measuring first downs.
