In honor of CHamoru Month, Tiana Quitugua, head speech-language pathologist and co-owner of Scoop Speech, is raising awareness about bilingual and multilingual language learning. She debunks common myths such as exposing children to more than one language causing confusion or speech delays. Research shows that bilingualism has cognitive benefits, and code-mixing is a normal part of language learning.
Quitugua recommends different approaches to language exposure for bilingual children, including the one parent, one language method, time/context-dependent language use, and mixed languages. She emphasizes the importance of patience, consistency, and creating a positive learning environment at home.
She also addresses concerns about speech-language challenges, stating that they can manifest in all languages spoken by a child. If there are concerns, consulting a speech-language pathologist is recommended.
Quitugua encourages celebrating and promoting the use of multiple languages, especially indigenous languages like Chamoru. She provides speech and language services for ages 0-21 via teletherapy to Guam residents through Scoop Speech.
