The Denver Broncos sign former Auburn defensive coordinator

The Denver Broncos have announced the hiring of Jeff Schmedding as their new inside-linebackers coach. Schmedding previously served as the linebackers coach at Auburn in 2021 and was promoted to defensive coordinator in 2022. He brings 21 years of coaching experience, all at the college level, to the Broncos.

Schmedding fills the vacancy left by Greg Manusky, who was fired in January. Prior to his time at Auburn, Schmedding spent two seasons as the defensive coordinator at Washington State. The move comes after the Broncos’ impressive defensive performance in the 2024 season, where they ranked third in points allowed and seventh in total yards surrendered.

The news of Schmedding’s hiring was reported by The Denver Post, NFL Network, and CBS Sports on Friday night. Broncos head coach Sean Payton will look to Schmedding to help lead the defense to continued success in the upcoming season.
