Texas reports record-breaking operating budget for 2023-24

Texas enjoyed a highly successful first season in the SEC in 2024, making it to the semifinal round of the College Football Playoff. The Longhorns’ financial investment in their football program was significant, with operating expenses exceeding $325 million while revenue reached $331.9 million, making them the first D1 public school to report both expenses and revenues of over $300 million in a single year.

In comparison, Ohio State had the second-highest operating expense total at $292.3 million, marking the largest operating expense totals ever reported in college athletics. These numbers were from Texas’ last season in the Big 12, with expectations of continued growth after moving to the SEC.

Texas reported a significant increase in contributions, reaching $133.9 million, attributed to increased fundraising efforts and the success of the football team. The team’s 12-2 record, Big 12 championship win, and College Football Playoff semifinal appearance contributed to the rise in contributions.

Despite the massive expenses, Texas was able to turn a profit, but Ohio State operated at around a $37 million deficit. The success and financial investments of both schools reflect their large fanbases and recent football success. As Texas continues in the SEC, it is anticipated that their financial numbers will grow even larger in the coming seasons.
