Swiss Athletes Excel in Wheelchair Marathon at Paris 2024 Paralympic Games | Paris Olympics 2024 Update

Switzerland dominated the Paralympic wheelchair marathons in Paris, with Catherine Debrunner and Marcel Hug winning the women’s and men’s races, respectively. China emerged as the overall winner of the Paralympics with 94 gold medals, followed by Britain and the USA. The Netherlands secured the women’s wheelchair basketball title, defeating the USA in a convincing victory.

British Paralympian David Weir announced his retirement after finishing fifth in his final event. The games also had a somber moment as a minute of silence was held in memory of Ugandan Olympic marathon runner Rebecca Cheptegei, who tragically passed away after a violent attack.

The closing ceremony promised to be a lively event at the Stade de France, with a DJ set and a symbolic handover to Los Angeles, the host of the next Paralympic Games in 2028. The medals table saw the Netherlands, Brazil, and Italy rounding out the top positions.

Despite challenges posed by the war with Russia, Ukraine’s athletes managed to finish in seventh place. The games in Paris showcased the incredible talent and determination of Paralympic athletes from around the world, as they competed and celebrated their achievements amidst a backdrop of both joy and remembrance.
