Press Release: Birmingham Weather Update – Hazy Skies and Upcoming Heat
Birmingham residents can expect a smoky haze early this week due to Canadian wildfire smoke. The haze, lingering from the weekend, will persist as upper-level winds carry it south towards the Gulf Coast. While the lower humidity has been a welcome change, forecasters warn that stickier summer conditions will return later this week, alongside the chance for thunderstorms.
Typically, Birmingham sees its first 90-degree day around May 23, but the city is currently behind schedule for this spring heat. The last recorded first 90-degree day was in June 2014, and this week could signal a shift. On Monday and Tuesday, expect mostly sunny skies and highs in the mid-80s. However, humidity will make temperatures feel closer to 90 degrees.
Looking towards the end of the week, tropical moisture is anticipated, with weak jet stream disturbances potentially fueling scattered thunderstorms. These downpours are expected to become more frequent as a cold front approaches the region. Unlike the severe weather experienced in May, this week’s storms are expected to be brief and scattered, with rainfall amounts potentially reaching up to two inches in some areas.
Additionally, as June 1 marks the beginning of the Atlantic hurricane season, forecasters note emerging signs of activity in the Gulf and Caribbean. There exists a minor possibility of the first tropical depression or storm forming within the next two weeks.
Residents are urged to stay weather-aware as severe thunderstorms can bring strong winds, heavy rain, and dangerous lightning. For updated weather alerts and forecasts, follow WVTM 13 News on social media or via the WVTM 13 app.
